Biblioteca Comunale
La biblioteca Comunale è una delle più antiche del circondario essendo già esistente in epoca Borbonica.
A seguito delle leggi abolizioniste degli ordini religiosi (1866), si arricchisce di circa 400 volumi, provenienti dalla biblioteca dei Cappuccini e dei Carmelitani.
Nel 1906 la biblioteca era ospitata nei locali a pianterreno dell’ex convento del Carmine, mentre nel 1953 venne trasferita in alcune aule della vecchia scuola del Carmine.
Nel 1964, dopo tanti anni di emigrazione, arriva Giuseppe Genovese che ha espresso il desiderio di voler donare a Bisacquino una biblioteca.
Genovese nato a Bisacquino nel 1895 dopo aver frequentato il liceo classico a Palermo, si è iscritto al Politecnico di Torino , laureandosi in Ingegneria Meccanica. Partecipò alla grande guerra col grado di capitano, venendo pluridecorato al valore militare.
Nel 1924 si trasferì negli U.S.A. avendo vinto un concorso governativo per studi dell’industrie meccaniche.
Si perfezionò quindi alla Columbia University e lavorò per l’industria aeronautica. Collaboratore del “Corriere d’America “ diretto da Luigi Baldini padre, fondò e diresse il giornale in lingua Italiana “Corriere Siciliano”.
Ritornò a Bisacquino dopo circa quarant’ anni con preciso desiderio e obbiettivo di realizzare il suo sogno giovanile, scaturito dal suo forte amore per i libri, ovvero la costruzione di una biblioteca pubblica da lui stessa progettata e finanziata. L’amministrazione comunale ha messo a disposizione l’area adiacente alla scuola elementare di circa 300 m quadri di terreno, la costruzione venne completata di nell’arco di un anno.
Un tempio classico, preceduto da colonne doriche in marmi pregiati, quasi ad imitazioni del Partenone, riporta incisa nel frontone la scritta ben visibile “ Biblioteca Comunale” mettendo la raffigurazione simbolica del sole raggiato con la scritta di chiara ispirazione illuministica.

L’inaugurazione avvenne il 10 ottobre 1966 alla presenza delle autorità civili e militari.
Con il tempo la struttura e’ diventata fatiscente, per una serie di movimenti del terreno, e nel 2013 è stata ristrutturata con un finanziamento pubblico diventando un fiore all’occhiello del paese, abbellita da una ringhiera, una panchina in legno coperta, sistemato il giardino circostante con un’illuminazione che la rende bella la notte, e resa fruibile a tutti gli utenti che si recano a visitarla.
La sala lettura di circa 80 m quadrati, è aperta ai lettori, con un patrimonio di circa 1200 libri.
E’ dotata di 171 cincquecentine,18 manoscritti e due incunaboli, questi ultimi, stampati a Venezia, uno porta la data del 22 novembre 1494 (l’opera dello stampatore Simone Bevilacqua) , l’altro del 21 novembre 1498 (opera dello stampatore Giovanni Michele Savonarola).
Un volume prezioso, datato 1500, di cui esiste un secondo esemplare nella biblioteca del British Museum di Londra, è un trattato di medicina di Galeno dal titolo Galeni de affectorum locorum notitia libri VI, tra i manoscritti, che trattano prevalentemente argomenti religiosi, si conservano una Regola di San Francesco e un corso di teologia di Duns Scoto, come pure un autografo di Padre Angelo di Bisacquino.

Tra i libri rari e/o di pregio vanno altresì ricordati una edizione del Decameron di Boccaccio, del 1608, stampato a Venezia; una storia del concilio di Trento, del 1718, stampato a Roma; un salterio Romano, de 1807, stampato a Venezia; una edizione della Naturalis Historia di Plinio il giovane, del 1612, stampate a Venezia; l’istoria della compagnia di Gesù di Domenico Stanislau Alberti, stampata a Palermo nel 1702 ; le memorie storiche di Giovan Battista Caruso, stampate a Palermo nel 1742e tanti altri libri di maggior pregio.
Il 2014 sarà l’anno in cui tutti i libri presenti all’interno della biblioteca saranno messi in rete su internet e perciò consultabili da tutti gli utenti del mondo.
Nella fase della sua costruzione l’ingegnere Giuseppe Genovese all’interno della biblioteca ha voluto mettere una lapide in marmo con la scritta “in memoria dei miei genitori Michele Genovese e Nicolina Caronna Genovese con umiltà e devozione dedico questa fonte di umana sapienza per i giovani Bisacquinesi ansiosi di conquistare l’avvenire”.
Genovese è morto a Palisaden Park (New Jersey)nel 1977, undici anni dopo l’inaugurazione della Biblioteca avvenuta il 10 ottobre 1966.
Giuseppe Genovese riposa nel cimitero di Bisacquino in una tomba monumentale che ha progettato e fatta costruire qualche anno prima.
